WHAT IS A HACKATHON?

A hackathon is a marathon software and hardware product creation event, or more simply put, it’s a competition that focuses on creative problem solving.

  • Programmers, designers, and others come together to form teams to build, create and deliver MVPs (Minimum Viable Products) in a short amount of time.

  • A hackathon generally lasts a few hours to 48 hours, this one is roughly 36 hours.

  • As extra incentives to participate, there are normally cash prizes and API (Application Program Interface) specific prizes for winning teams

  • All meals during the event are included; all participants need are a laptop to participate.

  • Hackathons are frequently used by companies to foster innovation and risk-taking.

  • Events culminate in demonstrations (demos) where judges crown the winners.

  • Many hackathon projects have created new features and/or become real companies after the event.

WHO CAN ATTEND?

Any talent, whether a programmer, designer, marketer, etc. Anyone who wants to tackle problems in the maritime industry. Make sure you register as a participant through Eventbrite.

I don’t know anyone else going, should i still come?

Yes! Most participants won’t know anyone else either. This is a great opportunity to meet new people. We’ll help facilitate team formation as well.

WILL THIS COST ME MONEY?

It’s only $10 for participants, and free otherwise. Just make sure you bring youw own laptop and we’ll cover the rest. We’ll provide all the food, swag, and fun times you need for the weekend.

What if i don’t know anything about the maritime industry?

Have no fear — we don’t expect you to! We’ll be sending an information packet with digestible information on the maritime industry prior to the hackathon. Mentors with industry experience will be on site to assist and and act as a sounding board.

IS WALK-iN REGISTRATION ALLOWED?

Sorry, no. In order to provide the best experience for our attendees, we need to know who’s coming in advance. All participants must register in advance.

WHAT’S THE EVENT SCHEDULE?

NYC Maritime Hackathon will start around 6pm on Friday, March 29th and last until around 4pm on Sunday, March 31st. We'll be releasing more details about the schedule as we get closer to the event.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

  • Government-issued ID or Student ID.

  • Laptop: Desktops aren’t great travel companions.

  • Chargers (laptop, phone, etc.): Make sure to remember chargers for everything you’re bringing.

  • Headphones: With so many hackers in one building, it can get a bit loud, so bring headphones if you want to get some quiet time.

  • Reusable water bottle: If you have one, bring it and help cut down on waste.

CAN I RESERVE A TICKET FOR SOMEONE ELSE?

Yes, but list the emails of your entire team when you reserve the tickets.
